Welcoming in 2010

As we all ring in the New Year questions should come to mind.  What goals to I have for: my health? my family's health? my well being? what new things will I do? how much money do I want to make? ....

what things are important for life?

As a Chiropractor, I take care of infants (minutes old) to senior citizens  (close to 100yo).  I am fortunate to see people that are healthy in all these age ranges and I also see people who are in their 20's-30's-and 40's who have the health of an ill 70yo.  Health doesn't deteriorate overnight... when your body is no longer to adapt to it's internal and external environments it breaks down (moving towards dis-ease and later disease).

The interesting part of this that symptoms pop up near the end of the process.  For example when someone is diagnosed with cancer and is given 6 months or a year to live, do you think the cancer showed up then?  NO WAY... it was probably there for years and years growing and getting stronger.  We all have cancer in our body at all times... they are the abnormal cells.

When our body can no longer adapt (because our body's nervous system is so stressed that it can't tell your immune system to kill those abnormal cells), the cancer cells start to multiply until the point that it takes over different organ systems not allowing us adapt to our environment...

I share this with you because I feel that our health care system is backwards.  We are trained to wait until bad things happen and symptoms show up to do something... then what do we do?  we opt for drugs (over the counter or prescription) or surgery to hide symptoms and not work on the cause.

Would you rather hide symptoms throughout life? or Focus on making your body stronger so you can live for longer healthier?

Chiropractic focuses on making your body stronger for longer!!! I bet you didn't know that.  It is based on finding interferences in your nervous system which are limiting your body's health potential... and yes it works with pain too, but that's about 10% of what we do.

So when you are making your goals for this year.... whether you are 18 or 80 years old, if you have never experienced the true power of Chiropractic, schedule an appointment TODAY!!!  Life is better when it is free from interference.

Thanks for reading and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

Life University.... Chiropractic's Largest College

Chiropractic In the News

Life University has been putting out great chiropractic for many years.  Their Sports teams have been dormant for a while, and in the past few years, they have been on the rise.  Check out Life U's Rugby team in the NY Times.... Click Here

Chiropractic has been around since 1895 and has worked since then.  Major media has been picking up Chiropractic a lot in the past years seeing us more than just "pain doctors".  The reality is, is that we are performance/wellness doctors.  We study the human body the same way medical doctors do.  What we do that is so different is that we are taught to find the major "cause" of why the body functioning less than normal.  Once we find that problem, we use hands to gently adjust the person to help increase the amount of life that is flowing through it.  With the body working better, the person can heal/grow/ and resist what was bothering it in the first place.

We'll talk soon about what causes in another post....!!!!!

Study Shows Chiropractic Care Benefits Constipated Infants

Chronic constipation second most frequent pediatric complaint

A very small study group—three infants, all under two years of age—was put into chiropractic care for periods of three weeks to three months in a controlled research project.  Following the study, which was funded by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association of Media, PA, all three children showed marked improvement in their condition.

“Chronic constipation afflicts the very young and the aged among our population with more frequency than the rest of us,” said NYC-based Dr. Josh Handt, D.C.  “This problem accounts for 25% of all visits to pediatric gastroenterologists, but few formal studies have been conducted.”

Researchers chose three infants who were experiencing infrequent bowel movements of from once a week to once every 3 or 4 days.  Parents of these infants had tried dietary changes and the use of cod liver oil and mineral oil, all under the direction of medical doctors.  Nothing worked.

“The infants received full spinal chiropractic care,” said Dr. Handt, “for periods ranging from three weeks to three months.  All three experienced almost immediate improvement, and by the end of the study, all three had bowel movements at least once every 1-2 days.”

“This study represents a very preliminary level of findings, and much more research is needed,” Dr. Handt added.  “But the results should offer some encouragement for parents of children with this problem.”

Anyone wishing more information may contact Dr. Handt, whose office is located at 91 Central Park West, New York, NY USA (telephone 212-580-3350).

Eight-year old got no relief from drugs or surgery!

(Nov2009) A respected journal of the Council on Chiropractic Pediatrics of the International Chiropractors Association, reports the case study of an eight-year old female patient suffering from recurring headaches and chronic ear and sinus infections.  The child had been through repeated rounds of antibiotic treatments and sinus surgery.  Even the extreme procedure of two tympanectomy surgeries to one of the child’s eardrums failed to alleviate her condition.

“Children are often plagued with sinus and ear conditions,” said NYC-based Dr. Josh Handt, D.C.  “This case study illustrates that when medical treatment fails to bring about the desired results, chiropractic care may be an effective alternative.  It is a non-invasive approach.”

In the case of this 8-year old, the parents had taken their child to several medical practitioners, but symptoms persisted.  The child’s regular pediatrician was about to recommend another tympanectomy and a continued regimen of antibiotics.  Before following that recommendation, the parents took their daughter to a chiropractor.   The examining chiropractor found the existence of a subluxation in the child’s upper cervical area and, using sEMG scanning technology, evidence of muscle hypertonicity, or tightness, in both the cervical and thoracic areas.

“A subluxation is a misalignment of the spine that disturbs normal nervous system function which controls the way your body works,” said Dr. Josh.  “Many chiropractors, including myself, have technology that allows them to conduct Surface Electromyography (sEMG) tests to assist in locating where such conditions exist.”

The patient underwent chiropractic care, including spinal adjustments.  After one month of such care, child and parents noted an absence of headaches, and sinus and ear pain had also decreased markedly.  As a result, the planned third ear surgery was cancelled.  The patient’s sEMG scans showed improvement, but chiropractic care was continued.  After four months, the patient reported that headaches had ceased and that ear and sinus infections were absent.  Her sEMG scans and x-rays were at, or near, normal.

“This is just one case study,” explained Dr. Josh, and more studies are needed before any absolute conclusions can be drawn.”

Dr. Josh’s chiropractic practice features the Insight Subluxation Station.  This technology is certified by the Space Foundation, and is used by 8,000 chiropractors worldwide to measure nervous system health and performance.

Serious Vaccine Reactions to Now Be Called 'Coincidence'?

Serious Vaccine Reactions to Now Be Called 'Coincidence'?

October 20 2009 |

swine flu, vaccine, swine flu vaccineEvery day Americans wake up to news reports that warn us about the dangers of influenza, especially the new H1N1 “swine flu”.

But swine flu is mild for most people and the virus is not mutating into a more serious form.

Millions of people around the world have recovered from swine flu, and millions more will get sick with fevers, body aches, nasal congestion, cough and sometimes diarrhea and vomiting and recover from it this year and next year without any complications.

Nonetheless, wide-scale vaccination is being encouraged -- even though swine flu vaccines have been tested on only a few thousand healthy Americans for a few weeks. There is little or no information about how safe the vaccine is for pregnant women and chronically ill or disabled children.

If you or your child are injured from getting a flu swine flu shot, you are on your own. Congress has shielded the vaccine manufacturers and any person giving swine flu shots from lawsuits if people get hurt.

There is no funded government vaccine injury compensation program for swine flu vaccine.

Do NOT let a doctor or anyone else tell you that a serious health problem you or your child experiences after vaccination is a coincidence and allow more shots to be given until you know for sure.

The most tragic cases of vaccine injury occur when vaccine reaction symptoms are dismissed as a 'coincidence" and more vaccines are given that result in more severe symptoms -- and sometimes end with permanent brain and immune system damage or death.

But while Americans are still debating whether to roll up their sleeves for a swine flu shot, companies have already figured it out: vaccines are good for business.

Drug companies have sold $1.5 billion worth of swine flu shots, in addition to the $1 billion for seasonal flu they booked earlier this year. These inoculations are part of a much wider and rapidly growing $20 billion global vaccine market.

"The vaccine market is booming," says Bruce Carlson, spokesperson at market research firm Kalorama, which publishes an annual survey of the vaccine industry. "It's an enormous growth area for pharmaceuticals at a time when other areas are not doing so well," he says, noting that the pipeline for more traditional blockbuster drugs such as Lipitor and Nexium has thinned.

As always with pandemic flus, taxpayers are footing the $1.5 billion check for the 250 million swine flu vaccines that the government has ordered so far and will be distributing free to doctors, pharmacies and schools. In addition, Congress has set aside more than $10 billion this year to research flu viruses, monitor H1N1's progress and educate the public about prevention.

Drugmakers pocket most of the revenues from flu sales, with Sanofi-Pasteur, Glaxo Smith Kline and Novartis cornering most of the market.

But some say it's not just drugmakers who stand to benefit. Doctors collect copayments for special office visits to inject shots, and there have been assertions that these doctors actually profit handsomely from these vaccinations.

Vaccine Awakening October 1, 2009

New York Times October 7, 2009

Time Magazine October 19, 2009

Examiner September 30, 2009

Notes from Mercola:

The vaccine market is booming right now. Already, drug companies have sold $1.5 billion worth of swine flu shots, in addition to the $1 billion for seasonal flu they booked earlier this year. In addition to that, Congress has set aside more than $10 billion this year to research flu viruses, monitor H1N1's progress and educate the public about prevention.

But there is still some good news in the midst of all this, and that is that more people than ever before are finally beginning to sit up and take notice, and are beginning to consider the risks versus benefits of flu vaccinations.
As I recently reported, a new poll by Consumer Reports shows that nearly 2/3 of American parents plan to either hold off on vaccinating their children against the H1N1 (swine flu) virus, or won't vaccinate them at all.

In fact, quite a number of surveys, polls and studies are showing that more and more people are refusing the swine flu shot for themselves or their children over health and safety concerns.
And even a recent New York Times article acknowledges this site as playing an important role in educating the public about vaccine safety concerns, which has contributed to a less than wholehearted embrace of the government’s recommendation to rush out and get vaccinated.
The NY Times reports that, "The popular Web site Mercola.com is urging parents not to get the flu vaccine ...", with the result that the majority of parents are now planning to refuse to let their children get these shots.
Largely as a result of this Web site's posting the information, and your sharing it with your friends and relatives, we have together created MAJOR doubt in the minds of many consumers about the value of these vaccinations. Many people are now coming to the realization that flu vaccinations can cause serious health problems.
Together, we are making a difference! A difference that is likely saving people’s lives and preventing permanent and irreversible health consequences.
Have You Thought About This?
Barbara Loe Fisher with the National Vaccine Information Center brings up several important points to consider in her blog, Vaccine Awakening. I highly recommend you read her article in its entirety, but here are a few of the highlights:
  • Getting vaccinated in a non-medical setting can be very dangerous.

The swine flu vaccine is now being offered all over the place; in pharmacies, stores, schools, and even drive-by kiosks. Getting vaccinated in a non-medical setting like this can be very risky. For example, if you drive away immediately after getting vaccinated and suffer an unexpected allergic reaction or collapse, it could be deadly, not only for you but also for innocent bystanders and others sharing the road with you.

These places also do not have the ability to properly evaluate your medical history, nor perform the necessary follow-up, should you have any adverse reactions.
  • If you get vaccinated and suffer health complications, REPORT IT!

This is a crucial element of vaccine safety, and diligent reporting of all adverse reactions can help save the lives of others. As Fisher recommends, insist that the health care worker who gave you the vaccine immediately files a report with the US federal Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS). If they, for whatever reason, won’t do it, you CAN file it yourself!

To file a report yourself, simply go to www.vaers.hhs.gov and follow the instructions.
  • Don’t accept “coincidences” when it comes to vaccine reactions.

I strongly agree with her concern when she says:
“Do NOT let a doctor or anyone else tell you that a serious health problem you or your child experiences after vaccination is a coincidence and allow more shots to be given until you know for sure.

The most tragic cases of vaccine injury occur when vaccine reaction symptoms are dismissed as a 'coincidence" and more vaccines are given that result in more severe symptoms and sometimes end with permanent brain and immune system damage or death.”
  • There is NO safety data or precedent for receiving 3-4 flu shots in one season.

Even though the media and government pronouncements sound confident and authoritative it’s vital to realize that the current recommendations by doctors and health officials are unprecedented, and highly experimental.

Some people, including children under the age of 10, are urged to get as many as four flu shots this year: two shots for seasonal flu and one or two more for swine flu, depending on a few different factors.

Never before have this many flu shots been given in a single season, and there is absolutely no information about the safety of doing so.
  • Standing up for health care workers’ right to choose could save you from mandatory vaccination down the line.

As of right now, the swine flu vaccination program is still voluntary – unless you’re a health care worker that is… New York and other states have already implemented laws that force their health care workers to get the swine flu vaccine in order to work.

According to a recent report in Time Magazine, this includes not just NY doctors and nurses who care for patients, but also administrative staff, including housekeeping and food-service personnel.

What does that tell you about the possibility of mandatory vaccinations for the rest of us?
Anti-Virals Now Pose Serious Health Threat from Environmental Sources Too
According to a Japanese study published in the September 28 issue of Environmental Health Perspectives, the flu drug Tamiflu is now contaminating rivers downstream of sewage-treatment facilities.
The source? Urinary excretion from people taking Tamiflu (oseltamivir phosphate).
Researchers are quite concerned that birds exposed to these waterborne residues could develop and spread drug-resistant strains of various types of flu.
Science News reports:
“Once ingested, virtually all Tamiflu will end up in the environment in the active form, notes environmental chemist Jerker Fick of UmeÃ¥ University in Sweden. The reason: Tamiflu becomes active once the body converts it into a carboxylate form.

Roughly 80 percent of an ingested dose becomes this OC, which your body eventually excretes.
Your body sheds the remaining 20 percent of Tamiflu in its original form, but this phosphate form is immediately turned into the active, carboxylate form when it reaches a water treatment plant, he says.”
Making matters worse, previous studies have confirmed that water treatment removes ZERO percent of this drug, and appears to have a half-life of approximately three weeks, once exposed to sunlight.
I bring this up to demonstrate the long-term dangers inherent in our current drug-based paradigm.
Each time you take a drug like Tamiflu, you not only expose yourself to potentially serious health risks, you’re also contributing to a growing problem of ever more drug-resistant flu strains that can affect countless others. The willy-nilly administering of anti-virals goes far beyond just the immediate health risks – it affects the environment and every living thing in it, including the human race at the top of the food chain.
The fact remains that there are many FAR BETTER alternatives to anti-viral drugs and vaccines. These drugs are not essential for human health – nutritious food, clean water, and an overall healthy lifestyle are.
I’ve listed my top recommendations for avoiding the flu on many occasions. For a refresher, you can find that list here.
In addition, should you be forced to take the swine flu shot, please review Dr. Blaylock’s recommendations on what to do in that situation.
The Time to Act is Now
I urge you to join NVIC and become a grassroots vaccine safety and informed consent advocate in your community.
“Stand up for the human right to make informed, voluntary health care choices, including vaccine choices, today - so your children and grandchildren and all Americans will have that right tomorrow.” Barbara Loe Fisher
If, like NVIC says, we don’t stand up for our rights to choose now, there is no doubt in my mind we’ll all be paying for it, both financially and physically, in the years to come.

Swine Flu More Dangerous than Vaccine says MD expert

From Dr. Josh-
The fascinating thing about the human body is that it has the potential to heal itself given the right circumstances. Our theory that germs get us sick is a backwards theory.  Don't we all breath the same air?  We travel is subways, sit in class rooms, offices, and walk on crowded streets.  The host's (person) ability to consistently adapt to it's environment, thus keeping the immune system strong as it can be will make you stronger than the person next to you.  Keeping you healthy.  You may be thinking how do I keep my body healthy and adapting?  It's not an outside in process like medicine.... it's an inside out process.  Your nervous system needs to be kept clear if interference (subluxations- which chiropractors work with), you need to move (exercise for your heart and other muscles in the body), need to eat well (fruits, vegetables, supplement if you need to), and keep your mind in a healthy place, by being positive......

Realize that this is not the treatment for the disease just sharing some positive light on this terrible scare tactic that is based off of sales of a vaccine.

Do NOT Let Your Child Get Flu Vaccine -- 9 Reasons Why

This year it is more important that you protect your children and loved ones from the flu vaccines than influenza itself. This article on Lew Rockwell discusses how:
  1. The swine flu is simply another flu. It is not unusually deadly.
  2. This is the first time both seasonal and pandemic flu vaccines will be administered. Both seasonal flu and swine flu vaccines will require two inoculations. This is because single inoculations have failed to produce sufficient antibodies. This is an admission that prior flu vaccines were virtually useless. Can you trust them this time?
  3. Adjuvants are added to vaccines to boost production of antibodies but may trigger autoimmune reactions. Some adjuvants are mercury (thimerosal), aluminum and squalene. Why would you sign a consent form for your children to be injected with mercury, which is even more brain-toxic than lead?
  4. This is the first year mock vaccines have been used to gain FDA approval. The vaccines that have been tested are not the same vaccines your children will be given.
  5. Over-vaccination is a common practice now in America. American children are subjected to 29 vaccines by the age of two. Meanwhile, veterinarians have backed off of repeat vaccination in dogs because of observed side effects.
  6. Modern medicine has no explanation for autism, despite its continued rise in prevalence. Yet autism is not reported among Amish children who go unvaccinated.
  7. Researchers are warning that over-use of the flu vaccine and anti-flu drugs like Tamiflu and Relenza can apply genetic pressure on flu viruses and then they are more likely to mutate into a more deadly strain.
  8. Most seasonal influenza A (H1N1) virus strains tested from the United States and other countries are now resistant to Tamiflu (oseltamivir). Tamiflu has become a nearly worthless drug against seasonal flu.
  9. Public health officials are irresponsible in their omission of any ways to strengthen immunity against the flu. No options outside of problematic vaccines and anti-flu drugs are offered, despite the fact there is strong evidence that vitamins C and D activate the immune system and the trace mineral selenium prevents the worst form of the disease.

These 4 Beliefs Defy Modern Science

These are from Dr. Mercola.... Bruce Lipton is a great person.  I highly recommend that you read his book -Biology of Belief

Myth # 1 : You Live in a Mechanical Universe
The first myth perception is that the world, especially biology and medicine, operates through Newtonian physics. It says you live in a mechanical universe.
According to this belief, your body is a physical machine, so by modifying the parts of the machine, you can modify your health.
As a physical machine, your body responds to physical “things” like chemicals and drugs, and by adjusting the drugs that modify your machinery, doctors can modify and control life.
Now, with the advent of quantum physics, scientists have realized that this theory is flawed because quantum physics show that the invisible, immaterial realm is far more important than the material realm.
In fact, your thoughts may shape your environment far more than physical matter.
Einstein himself is quoted as saying: “The field is the sole governing agency of the particle.” What that means is that invisible energy is the sole governing agency of matter (the physical world).
It’s interesting to note that the word ‘spirit’ by spiritualists, and the word ‘field’ by physicists, use the same definition for those two words.
So, the new science is actually taking us back, and shows that your thoughts, your attitudes, your beliefs, and the invisible environment, are more primary in shaping your life than anything in the physical world is.
Myth # 2: Your Genes Control Your Life
In his book, The Biology of Belief, Dr. Lipton explains the foundation of epigenetics, and how the true secret to life does not lie within your DNA, but rather within the mechanisms of the cell membrane. In this way – which is contrary to conventional medical science – it is actually the cell’s membrane -- operating in response to environmental signals picked up by the membrane’s receptors -- that control the “reading” of the genes inside.

What does this mean?
It means that you are not controlled by your genetic makeup. Instead, your genetic readout (which genes are turned “on” and which are turned “off”) is primarily determined by your thoughts, attitudes, and perceptions!
The major problem with believing the myth that your genes control your life is that you become a victim of your heredity. Since you can’t change your genes, it essentially means that your life is predetermined, and therefore you have very little control over your health. With any luck, modern medicine will find the gene responsible and be able to alter it, or devise some other form of drug to modify your body’s chemistry, but aside from that, you’re out of luck…
The new science, however, reveals that your perceptions control your biology, and this places you in the role of Master, because if you can change your perceptions, you can shape and direct your own genetic readout.
It places YOU in the power position, for better or worse.
As Dr. Lipton says,
“This is very relevant to the world that we are in because we have to take back a belief that we have power over our lives. Because our current perception is that we are victims, and since perceptions control life, if you believe you are a victim, you become a victim. When we change our perceptions, we can become masters. So we are moving out of “victimhood” into mastery.”
Myth # 3: Life is Based on Survival of the Fittest
The third misperception is the Darwinian belief that life and evolution is based on the survival of the fittest, which is an inherent competition and a struggle for existence that goes on forever. The new science, however, shows that this is incorrect; that evolution was not based on competition, but rather on cooperation.
This is a profound difference, and it tells us that if we want to evolve as a species, we must stop competing, and begin to recognize our coherence – that we evolved to live as a harmonious community of people, living on this planet as one living “thing” called humanity.
Myth # 4: Life Evolved as a Random Process
This is another Darwinian theory. The significance of this myth is that, based upon it, you have no purpose here, and humans are somewhat disconnected from the environment altogether.
It says that you got here by accident, and since humanity was accidental, humans have no real purpose here on planet earth.
The new biology, on the other hand, reveals that you are in fact an extension of your environment.
In fact, every time an organism is introduced into an ecosystem, its function is to balance it and keep it stable. When viewed from this perspective, you realize that the function of your existence here on earth is to create harmony and stability within your environment.
Says Dr. Lipton,
“… humanity evolved as a compliment to an environment. The very scary situation is, if we destroy the environment that created us, then essentially, we are destroying the foundation of our existence.”

Eight-Year Old’s Chronic Earaches Helped by Chiropractic Care

(August 2009, NYC).   Chiropractic care is often thought of by the public only in terms of relief from back and neck pain, but doctors of chiropractic have long espoused the health benefits received by patients for a wide variety of ailments.
“There are certainly no guarantees with any course of care,” said Dr. Josh Handt, a New York City-based chiropractor who strives to keep current with the latest research and developments in health and wellness.   “And every case depends on the specific factors associated with that case.  But we see, from time to time, individual case studies that give rise to hope for many.”
Dr. Handt cited a recent case study by two colleagues involving an 8-year old female suffering from chronic earaches, headaches, and sinus pain.  “Aside from the common cold, ear infections are probably the most frequently diagnosed ailment among children,” said Dr. Handt.  “This particular patient had undergone multiple emergency room visits, two surgeries on her ear drums and one surgery on her sinuses, and several rounds of antibiotic treatment, all to no avail.”  The parents brought the child in to see a chiropractor, and examination of the patient determined the presence of a vertebral subluxation.   “A subluxation is a misalignment of the spine that disturbs normal nervous system function,” said Dr. Handt.  “Many chiropractors, including myself, have special, non-intrusive technology that allows them to conduct thermal and Surface Electromyography (sEMG) tests to assist in locating where such conditions exist.”
According to the case study, which was reported in the June 2009 issue of the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal, and Family Health,
. . . a surface EMG [electromyography, a non-invasive procedure] was performed utilizing an Insight Subluxation Station, in accordance with published protocols.  The purpose of the test was to assess paraspinal muscle activity and compare it to published norms.
The patient was placed in chiropractic are for a total of 29 visits over a three-month period.  After one month, the parents reported an absence of headaches, earaches and sinus pain, at which point the parents cancelled a third surgery that had been scheduled.  Nine months after the course of care was completed, the child remained free of all her previous symptoms, as confirmed by the child’s pediatrician.
“This is just one case study,” Dr. Handt emphasized, “and more studies are needed before any absolute conclusions can be drawn.  But as chiropractors, we believe that the nervous system is the master-controller of the systems and functions of the human body.  It stands to reason, then, that improvement in nervous system function, which is what we do as chiropractors, can have a beneficial effect on overall health.”
Anyone wishing more information may contact Dr. Handt, whose office is located at 91 Central Park West, New York, NY (telephone 212-580-3350).  Dr. Handt uses the same Insight Subluxation Station technology in her practice that was used in the cited case study.

Chiropractic Care May Ease ADHD, Ear Problems

(July, 2009). An article in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research points to a case study involving a 4-year old boy diagnosed by his pediatrician with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). He was dropped by his day care center because of the disruptive effects of his ADHD. The child had a history of ear infections, coughing, poor appetite, and abnormal sleep patterns, and had been also diagnosed with asthma at age 2 and put on a nebulizer.

The child’s mother brought him to a chiropractor for evaluation. The examining chiropractor, using a non-intrusive instrument known as an Insight Subluxation Station, conducted thermal and sEMG scans of the child’s spine and found the existence of a subluxation in the child’s cervical area.

“A subluxation is a misalignment of the spine that disturbs normal nervous system function,” said Dr. Josh Handt, a local chiropractor whose patients include a great many children. “Many chiropractors, including myself, have this technology that allows them to conduct thermal and Surface Electromyography (sEMG) tests to assist in locating where such conditions exist.”

The patient underwent chiropractic care, including spinal adjustments, with frequency of care initially set at three times per week for two and a half months.
The child was a difficult subject because of his hyperactivity, but when promised rewards by the parents for his cooperation, he became more amenable to the care program.
Twelve days into the treatment program, the mother reported the child’s eating habits had improved. The child was reevaluated at the 13th visit, at which point the mother said her son’s appetite was back to normal. She also said his sleep patterns had improved and he was much less hyperactive. He was able to stop all medication and his school work also showed a better ability to focus and perform assigned tasks.

After the initial 2 ½ -month plan of chiropractic care, improved thermal and sEMG scans were noted, and visits were cut back to twice a week. The child’s progress continued, but when chiropractic care was disrupted and later discontinued because of the parents moving out of state, the child’s symptoms began to reappear.

“This is just one case study,” said Dr. Handt, and more studies are needed before any absolute conclusions can be drawn. Nevertheless, regular chiropractic care does seem to have made a difference in this particular case.”

Dr. Handt’s chiropractic practice features the Insight Subluxation Station. This technology is certified by the Space Foundation and is used by 8,000 chiropractors worldwide to measure nervous system function and performance.

Anyone wishing more information may contact Dr. Handt, whose office is located at 91 Central Park West, New York, NY (telephone 212-580-3350).

Chiropractic Care Resolves 7-Year Old’s Ataxia

(June 2009, NYC).   Chiropractic care is often thought of only in terms of relief from back and neck pain, but the plain truth is that case studies suggest many different health problems may respond to a regular program of chiropractic care. According to a recent case study, the condition known as Ataxia, a neurological disorder characterized by a lack of coordination in muscle movements, resolved following a regimen of chiropractic adjustments.
The 7-year old female in this particular case underwent a thorough chiropractic exam, and a trans-neuronal dysfunction to the right cerebellum was noted and a diagnosis of cerebellar ataxia made.  Subluxations were also noted as a result of the examination.
According to the case study, which was reported in the April 2009 issue of the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal, and Family Health,
. . . chiropractic adjustments were delivered to the area of subluxation in either the cervical, thoracic, lumbar and/or pelvic region as needed.  Neuro-rehabilitative exercises were given either at home and/or during the office visit.  Within four visits there was marked improvement of gait patterns and resolution of the ataxia.

Flu Prevention Plan Should Include Chiropractic Care

Flu Prevention Plan Should Include Chiropractic Care

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

People of all ages are encouraged to add chiropractic to their strategy for warding off and fighting the flu and its effects – swine flu or otherwise.

Spinal adjustments can have a positive effect on immune function according to a growing number of researchers who are exploring the common denominators in disease processes, and the role of the nervous, immune, and hormonal systems in development of immune related illnesses.

Chiropractic corrects spinal abnormalities called vertebral subluxations that result in interference of the nervous system. Since the nervous system controls all functions of the body -- including the immune system -- chiropractic care can have a positive effect on immune function.

“Contemporary research is beginning to shed light on the neurobiological mechanisms which may explain the outstanding clinical results chiropractors have experienced when managing patients with viral and infectious diseases,” stated Dr. Christopher Kent, Co- Founder of Chiropractic Leadership Alliance.

Dr. Kent explained: “A comprehensive review of the research literature reveals the current understanding that the brain and immune system are the two major adaptive systems in the body. During an immune response, the brain and the immune system 'talk to each other' and this process is essential for maintaining homeostasis or balance in the body."

Since its inception, chiropractic has asserted that viruses and microbes don't threaten us all equally and that a healthy immune system easily repels most invaders. The immune system protects us from the flu, as well as any other infectious disease, and strives to get us well again when we do fall ill. Our immune system, like every other system in the body, is coordinated and controlled by the nervous system.

Chiropractors are also aware of the importance of positive health life style practices (rest, drinking ample quantities of water, diet, exercise, proper diet, use of multivitamins and minerals, and stress reduction approaches) that can also positively influence the nervous system and immune response. According to a large study of the chiropractic profession recently conducted by the Institute for Social Research, Ohio Northern University (McDonald et al., 2003), chiropractors also customarily advise their patients as to the benefits of these other modalities in optimizing overall health.

Chiropractors helping patients battle the flu is not a new occurrence either. During the 1917-18 influenza epidemic, which brought death and fear to many Americans, it has been estimated that 20 million people died throughout the world, including about 500,000 Americans. It was chiropractic’s success in caring for flu victims that led to the profession’s licensure in many states.

Researchers reported that in Davenport, Iowa, out of the 93,590 patients treated by medical doctors, there were 6,116 deaths -- a loss of one patient out of every 15. Chiropractors at the Palmer School of Chiropractic adjusted 1,635 cases, with only one death. Outside Davenport, chiropractors in Iowa cared for 4,735 cases with only six deaths -- one out of 866. During the same epidemic, in Oklahoma, out of 3,490 flu patients under chiropractic care, there were only seven deaths. Furthermore, chiropractors were called in 233 cases given up as lost after medical treatment, and reportedly saved all but 25. In another report covering 4,193 cases by 213 chiropractors 4,104 showed complete recovery.

“These results are not so surprising given what we now know about the interaction between the nervous system and the immune system” stated Matthew McCoy DC, MPH, Editor of the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health – Chiropractic. “Through research we know that chiropractic has beneficial effects on immunoglobulins, B-lymphocytes (white blood cells), pulmonary function and other immune system processes.”

One such study, conducted by Patricia Brennan Ph.D and her team, found that when a chiropractic “manipulation” was applied to the middle back, the response of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (white blood cells) taken from blood collected 15 minutes after the manipulation was significantly higher than blood collected 15 minutes before and 30 and 45 minutes after the chiropractic procedure. This research demonstrated an “enhanced respiratory burst” following the chiropractic adjustment. This “burst” is needed for our immune cells to destroy invading viruses and bacteria.

Another small study of HIV positive patients was conducted to study the effects of specific chiropractic adjustments to correct vertebral subluxations in the upper neck on the immune systems of HIV positive individuals. Over the six-month period of the study, the group that did not receive chiropractic care experienced a 7.96% decrease in CD4 cell counts, while the adjusted group experienced a 48% increase in CD4 cell counts over the same period.

A large retrospective study conducted by Robert Blanks Ph.D and colleagues studied 2,818 individuals undergoing chiropractic care - these individuals reported an average overall improvement, ranging from 7-28%, in a battery of physical symptoms including stiffness/lack of flexibility in the spine, physical pain, fatigue, incidence of colds and flu, headaches, menstrual discomfort, gastrointestinal disorders, allergies, dizziness and falls (Blanks et al., 1997, Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research).
More importantly, the incidence of colds and flu was reduced by an average of 15% in this large population who were undergoing regular chiropractic care.

“In addition to the passive recommendations regarding hand washing, avoiding large gatherings, coughing and sneezing into your hands – it makes a great deal of sense to do everything you can to ensure that your immune system is functioning at its best. And that strategy should include chiropractic care” stated Dr. McCoy.
